I just had class with the 9G. As you know, because they learn another language, the class of 26 is split in half. I only have 13 students at a time, while the other half is with the German teacher. It is much easier that way.
Today didnt go so well. The students usually study English and can read it, but when it comes to speaking, its a no go. Very strategically I throw in some speaking activities in the mix so as to help them become more comfortable with the language, and so they can practice the words they have learned.
Today we worked from the textbook. They were intented to spark debates. The topics we "discussed" were
Whats more important, What you say, or how you say it?
What is better, Learning from instruction, or learning from experience?
I asked the students to write their thoughts on their papers, after dicussing it with their partner. Of course most of them didnt discuss anything with their partner, and most of them wrote one sentence responses. Then we did a debate styled exercise, where I put something on the board, for example, English is very easy to master. They had to agree or disagree, stand with the people who thought like them, come up with a reason why, then say it aloud. You think this worked? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. They all just leaned on the wall in complete boredom. It was like pullin teeth to get them to talk to each other at all, let alone say anything aloud in english. And that was partly because most of the class didnt understand what was going on.
Ive noticed that most of the students are kinda like empty vessels. They never have an opinion about anything, and frankly dont like to do anything in class. I remember when I was in high school, teachers pushed us to be different, speak our opinions, think for ourselves. We did plenty of critical thinking exercises too. But maybe its different cuz this is not their first language. But even those students who speak ENG really well in my class, they are still very lazy. One kid refuses to stop cursing in my class. He just keeps sayin all types of ass, fucks, shits etc. I wish he would put more energy into using OTHER vocab words.
I left class today feeling very discouraged and kinda pissed off. Discouraged cuz it made me realize that I can push these kids all I want but its up to them to want to learn. And clearly from the look on their faces, they wasnt havent it! And pissed off cuz it is now March and they still act like they arent used to my class. In most of the classes we have together I ask them questions, try to get them to speak, and usually do fun activities with them like games and competitions, but to this day it still takes me forever to get them motivated to even play the games in the first place or to even do simple work like write in their notebooks. They are so damn lazy! I have to say 10 times write you answers in your notebooks, or walk around and be on their backs to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. When I was in school I understood that school work had to be done, and that is what pisses me off. The fact that they act like they dont have to do shit in school, or do homework, cuz they will still get good grades (cuz they are NATURALLY gifted! yeah right). And the sad reality is, they probably WILL still get good grades. But thats another blog post.........
Im frowning right now!
